Though I have visited Paris a little over a dozen times, this small museum in the 16th Arrondissement, is one I have only just discovered. Maison La Roche was built between 1923 and 1925 by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, and sits next to the Le Corbusier Foundation, hidden behind the Parisian apartment blocks. The house was commissioned for bachelor and art collector Raoul La Roche, who desired a somewhat spartan interior. The atmosphere of the Maison La Roche is one of Purist rationality and austerity, with a “subsistence” aesthetic. Naked lightbulbs were hung from simple black tubes, spotless white walls displayed his art collection, and minimal furnishings stripped this house back to escape superfluous decor.
