I wish I lived here: 3 light, calm living rooms

We’re deep into our renovations of our living room and kitchen in our new house at the moment (I’ll share a little progress report shortly, once all the dust has settled… literally) so all my thoughts have been on the little interior finishing touches which will make it home; paint swatches and tiling patterns, lighting plans and deliberating over plug switches, trawling reclamation yards in search of the perfect-sized floorboards (plus the other uglier truths I’ll just briefly brush over… overflowing toilets, inexplicable leaks, holes in the ceiling, dirt, dust, more dirt, more destruction).

Anyway, if I try to project forward to a time when it will all be clean and clear of workmen, I picture a light, calm living space, something a bit like these three beautiful rooms I came across on Stadshem below, I hope. In keeping with this light, bright theme, I’ve noticed lots of living spaces forgoing dark hues and moody colours in favour of white or cream sofas. Perhaps not the most practical of colours, but they do appeal to the minimalist in me, especially when paired with lots of lovely natural textures and a scattering of monochrome artwork. Watch and learn…

Living Room 1

This lovely, light grey painted space transitions beautifully from living room to bedroom, with the stripped wooden floor and natural coloured rugs giving warmth. Interest has been added with mismatched chairs and a scattering of dark black coffee tables to display objects to give a relaxed look and feel.

Living Room 2

This living space is probably lighter still, with beautiful cornicing details, big windows, white washed floors and tall ceilings – the dream. Those stunning Arne Jacobsen Series 7 chairs create a cosy corner for dining, while greenery adds just the lightest touch of colour.

Living Room 3

This is one of my favourites of the three, if only for that stunning old fireplace in the corner with its vintage sage green tiles. Here, a Moroccan Beni Ourain rug gives a bit of shaggy texture and monochrome pattern to the space, without being too over the top or dominating. Keeping all the finishes and soft furnishings in the same colour palette helps keep the scheme balanced. The sofa’s IKEA, I’ve got my eye on it myself, and I just love those simple but classic HAY coffee tables.
