6 simple bathroom collections for the design conscious

My bathroom is the least bit pretty but I thought I would dream a little and share with you 6 simple bathroom collections for the design conscious out there. From modular vanity units to smooth, sculptural bath tubs, I think you’ll appreciate these minimalist, well-crafted designs just as much as me.

Mya Collection by Studio Altherr for Burgbad

Launched this year, Barcelona-based Studio Altherr has designed a bathroom collection for Burgbad inspired by traditional Shaker furniture. Reducing the design to the bare essentials, the new Mya collection brings past and present together with a focus on natural materials, craftsmanship and an appreciation of simplicity. Studio Altherr describes the ethos as ‘warm minimalism’. It feels very Japanese too me.

The collection comprises a vanity unit, stool, full-length mirror, towel rack and room divider. The simple pieces are made of solid oak, with slender, rounded legs and dovetail-jointed drawers. Real wood veneer is used for the fronts and frames, with leather handles, while the tops of vanity units are finished in white ceramic with a softly rounded washbasin. Nothing is superfluous, joints and hardware have been concealed where possible, integrated wooden rails can be used to hang towels, and two minimal drawers and leather pockets help hide things away.

Studio Altherr says: ‘Wood and leather give Mya a sense of cosiness and an aura of permanence: the idea of something that has been entrusted to us, reflecting both nature and a culture of simplicity.’

Swoon

Launched in September last year, young Swedish furniture company Swoon have created a customisable bathroom collection designed by Fredrik Wallner with ceramic tops designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune.

The Swoon Studio range comes in four sizes – one is especially designed for smaller bathrooms at just 37cm deep. The units can be ordered in any NCS-colour (I particularly like the dark grey of course) with vanity tops from Italian company Globo in grey, white and black. Vanity tops are available with or without tap holes, giving the option to have simple wall-mounted taps.

Swoon’s furniture is delivered ready assembled directly from the factory in Sweden to customers currently in Scandinavia, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, United Kingdom and France.

Oblon by Stefano Cavazzana for Novello

The new collection by Stefano Cavazzana for Italian brand Novello comprises a series of simple accessories and containers bringing to mind Japanese culture. Inspired by Bento boxes and the traditional art of Raku clay ceramics, the collection has a harmonious, Zen feel to it, with rounded edges, simple white trays and wooden peg legs. The centrepiece is a washbasin in Teknorit, which comprises three elements that are stackable and interchangeable. Small details are celebrated, from a small shelf on the mirror for storage or holding a smartphone to the tactility of the materials and smooth edges.

Eldon by Conran + Partners for Victoria + Albert Baths

British designers Conran + Partners have designed a new bath for luxury British bathing brand Victoria + Albert Baths. Seeking to create a bath with the aesthetic of a freestanding bath, the contemporary back-to-wall design has a smooth contour and clean shape. The pipework is hidden beneath a full width tap deck, the designers created a space underneath the bath so the Eldon can be fitted without disturbing existing flooring or needing a plinth.

Made of Quarrycast, a unique blend of Volcanic Limestone and high performance resins, the bath comes in seven finishes, including glossy white and black, matt white and black, anthracite, stone grey and light grey. The material is smooth, scratch-resistant, super-strong and lightweight.

Frame by Norm Architects for ex.t

My favourite Danish architecture studio, Norm Architects, has designed a versatile modular bathroom system for ex.t. It won in the bathroom category at the annual Elle Decoration International Design Awards at the Salone del Mobile fair in Milan. The clean and minimalist design comprises thin, black graphic frames that can be customised depending on the size and needs of your bathroom. A simple moulded sink and top can be mounted onto the system, while wooden drawers provide discreet storage.

Vipp

The classic, minimalist bathroom design comes from Danish brand Vipp. With a clean aesthetic, the Vipp982 bathroom module comes in three sizes and is made of powder-coated aluminium and steel with a durable DuPont Corian tabletop. Complete the stylish look with the Vipp906 bathroom tap in stainless steel, Vipp’s famous pedal bin and white wall spot lights.

Says Morten Bo Jensen, chief designer at Vipp: ‘The rounded edges of the mirror’s extruded aluminium frame, the bath module’s soft lines and the semi-organic shape of the wall spot together provides a soft expression to solid materials. The bathroom concept is a mirror image of the Vipp DNA; injecting a functional and visual cohesiveness to the bathroom.’
