#thesimpleeveryday - a hashtag on Instagram

#thesimpleeveryday round-up – October 2016

I’m very excited to say that I’m off to Australia for three weeks for a much-needed holiday and dose of vitamin D! There’ll still be a few posts going live on here while I’m away, but I thought I’d leave you with some of my favourite picks from #thesimpleeveryday hashtag on Instagram. The hashtag has now been going for two months (you can see my favourites from September here) and we’re nearly up to 500 images! I love checking the feed each day, being surprised and inspired by the delights it holds. I’ve discovered new accounts I didn’t follow before, gained new perspectives of everyday moments and got to see a little of the world through other people’s very imaginative eyes. This month, as the days have been getting colder and the evenings darker, there’s definitely been an autumnal feed to the images. Just looking at them makes me want to curl up on a cosy sheepskin rug, put the candles on and sip a steaming mug of hot coffee, gazing out at the wind …

John Pawson's Life House for Living Architecture - a holiday home designed for moments of calm and reflection

Travel: John Pawson’s Life House for Living Architecture

Back at the beginning of August, we escaped for three nights of peace and relaxation to the Life House – a simple, contemporary holiday home designed by the architect John Pawson for Living Architecture. It was unlike anywhere I had stayed before, a retreat away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, from which to rest, reinvigorate and restore, all in the stunning, picturesque setting of the Welsh countryside. Set up to promote modern architecture, Living Architecture commissions some of the best architects to design houses in some of the most beautiful locations in Britain, a winning formula right? You might have seen Grayson Perry and FAT’s jolly A House for Essex, or the precariously cantilevered Balancing Barn in Suffolk by MVRDV, or wondered what that peculiar looking boat is doing perched on top of the Southbank Centre. They’re all available to rent, making the perfect getaway whether you have an interest in architecture and an appreciation for meticulous design, would like to experience what it’s like to live, eat and sleep in a space designed by a top architectural practice …

#thesimpleeveryday - a new hashtag on instagram started by @catesthill

#thesimpleeveryday a round-up – September 2016

It’s been a month now since I started #thesimpleeveryday hashtag on Instagram, I’ve loved seeing you share your everyday calm, minimal moments, so I thought I’d do a little round-up of my favourite images that have been shared so far. As a reminder, #thesimpleeveryday is all about seeking a moment of calm in the mundane of the everyday – to take a moment out of our busy schedules to simply slow down and appreciate the little things. It’s finding a way to uplift our daily lives, whether it’s focusing more intently on everyday rituals, savouring a little quiet time to ourselves in a busy day, or simply being more aware of the spaces we’re inhabiting. Really, it’s about simply celebrating the everyday but also to trying to find simplicity every day. I’ve certainly found it’s helped me focus everyday, to clear some of the clutter in my brain and be more conscious of what I buy, where I go and what I do. For example, it’s trying not to flick through my phone when I’m having a cup of coffee but actually …

Better Sleep with a Leesa mattress

Better Sleep with a Leesa mattress

I’ve written about my quest for a good night’s sleep before but I’ve always focused on the routine of bedtime – meditation techniques, relaxing scents and calming baths, I’ve tried it all – not the actual apparatus. With deadlines, juggling too many things at once and being constantly switched on, I’ve become used to the occasional, horrible sleepless night with a mind endlessly whirring. So, in search of the perfect night’s sleep, I’m willing to give anything a go, and where better to start than with what you sleep on. If you get the foundations right, the rest will follow right? That’s where Leesa, a US mattress brand recently expanded to the UK, steps in. On a mission to help people sleep better, Leesa creates foam mattresses that can be bought online and delivered straight to your door in one compact box, without you having to move a muscle (except maybe a few clicks of a button). Set up by David Wolfe after years of trouble sleeping and awkward experiences in mattress showrooms, Leesa offers a very different kind of …

Urban Jungle Bloggers: Jungle Animals

Urban Jungle Bloggers: Jungle Animals

I’ve been a very bad Urban Jungle Blogger! Not only have I not posted a plant-based blog post in a while, quite a few of my plants have died a slow death this winter… Slap on the wrist for me. But, with the theme this month of Jungle Animals, and a certain cheeky chappy coming to stay, it was the perfect opportunity to snap some new plant additions in a corner of my home. Meet Harry, a little miniature dachshund who is sure to melt hearts. I look after him every so often when I work from home. I really, really, really want a dachshund of my own, but until then, this is my borrowed jungle animal… With his expressive little eyes and tiny paws, he’s an absolute cutie. He likes to sit on my lap when I work on my computer and is always after attention. But, it seems not when the camera’s on! It took some persuasion to get him to sit still and stop wriggling about, I’m sure in the picture above …

beating the january blues

home + happiness: 7 tips for beating the January blues

I’ve never been diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) but there’s some elements of the disorder, sometimes known as “winter depression”, that clouds my winter months. A slightly low mood, wanting to stay in bed longer, craving stodgy comfort food and longing for the sunnier Spring months – I think it’s something we all suffer from to an extent in cold, dark January. It’s my least favourite month of them all. So I’ve gathered all my tried-and-tested tips and tricks for beating the January blues – to help us all get through the grey days and dark evenings. 1. Mind over matter Mindfulness is all about slowing down, re-focusing and de-stressing. At first it may seem like a bit of a fad, or some hippy concept, but by simply concentrating on your breathing and being aware of what’s going on around you, you can let go of those little everyday stresses. It might be that you take 10-15 minutes to do some meditation (I love the headspace app, it has different packs focusing on everything from self-esteem to relationships, creativity and generosity) or …

healthy eating: overnight oats and chia seeds recipe

At the start of the New Year, after feeling a bit sluggish over Christmas with all those mince pies and roast dinners, I decided to have a bit of a health-kick and go dairy-free, gluten-free and sugar-free. I was inspired by some of my favourite food bloggers, Deliciously Ella, Madeleine Shaw and Tess Ward, who all advocate clean eating and cooking simple, wholesome meals with fresh ingredients from scratch. Their way of eating isn’t about counting calories or being overly restrictive, but eating well to energise and restore the mind and body. I was already dairy-free and had already been advised a low GI diet due to insulin resistance, so it was a no-brainer, I just needed a New Year push to get going… Now, I’ve swapped chocolate bars for raw cacao, starchy white rice and pasta for whole grains, crisps for nuts, and have even invested in NutriBullet for a daily smoothie. This January, Robert Welch is launching its #eatwell campaign, encouraging us all to make a few small positive changes: to enjoy eating well, preparing fresh food and taking …
