IKEA day bed - Upcoming collections to look forward to from IKEA - HJÄRTELIG collection

News + upcoming collections from IKEA’s Democratic Design Day 2017

The other week I went to Älmhult in Sweden, the birthplace of IKEA, for the company’s Democratic Design Day 2017. This annual global event is used as a platform to invite press into their ‘house of curiosity’ and reveal all the latest news and future collaborations and collections coming up. And let me tell you, there’s lots to look forward to! IKEA has always had the aim of making design accessible for the many. It’s something I really believe in too – design that is not an elitist thing only a few can afford, but something everyone can tap into. Now their design process is based on five key pillars: Form, Function, Quality, Sustainability and Affordability – a common language through the company to measure what is good in design. It informs every product right from the beginning, to ensure IKEA keeps pushing for simpler, smarter, and better looking objects for the home. This means they want to combine beautiful form with good function, long-lasting quality, produced in a sustainable value chain with a low price. Says Marcus Engman, Head …

First look: IKEA x HAY YPPERLIG collection

Last week I attended IKEA’s Democratic Design Day 2017, a global event for launching the furniture group’s new products, collaborations and collections, held in the rural Swedish town of Älmhult where the very first IKEA store was built. I’ll share lots of exciting news in a separate post, but first I thought I’d share my favourite of them all – Danish brand HAY‘s much-anticipated YPPERLIG collection. When two greats of Scandinavian design come together with similar values, it’s bound to produce interesting results. The collaboration between IKEA and husband-and-wife duo Rolf and Mette Hay of HAY really seems like the perfect meeting of minds – both share an ambition to make good design accessible to all and an eye for sophisticated industrial manufacturing. Comprised of 72 pieces, YPPERLIG is a collection of understated yet contemporary staples that explore the functional and emotional needs of the modern home. From day-beds and sofas, through cushions and candleholders, to shelving and stools, the collection combines technical innovation with simple, pared-back design. The pieces are predominantly designed for the living room but could seamlessly fit in elsewhere in the home. They’re clean and minimal, while maintaining …

My home on Amara’s Home Inspiration page

Wonder where you can get all your favourite Scandinavian brands grouped together in one handy place? Well, look no further than online retailer Amara. You might be familiar with them for their interior blog awards they hold each year, but did you know they’re also a one-stop-shop for home inspiration. With over 300 luxury homeware brands and 35,000 products on offer, their website is a treasure trove of home accessories and furniture designed for stylish living. They’ve just launched an exciting, new section to Amara.com– a shoppable gallery of inspiring images with lots of ideas on how you can achieve the same looks in your own home. They asked a group of bloggers, stylists and designers (including me!) to style up some of their favourite pieces from the site in their own signature style. Arranged by room, style and trends, the new page takes you down a rabbit warren of inspiration, with examples from real homes showing how these products can brighten up a space. Below is my home, with pieces from some of my favourite Scandi brands. You might recognise …

COS x HAY spring/summer 2017 campaign

Fresh styling from COS X HAY Spring/Summer 2017

Spring is very nearly here, the days are lighter and everything feels brighter. As we look ahead to the new season, here’s some lovely, fresh, spring-like styling from COS X HAY’s new Spring/Summer 2017 campaign. The love affair between fashion brand COS and Danish design brand HAY continues with deep green accessories for the home, pared-back neutral ceramics and elements for springtime rituals. The curated collection, now in its third year, is available in stores and online, offering simple, straightforward, functional designs at affordable prices. Says Rolf Hay: ‘We want people to buy things that they can treasure for many years, not throw away.’ I’ll now let the images do the talking… Here are some of my favourites from the Spring collection, lots of fresh greens and soft neutrals: Shop the COS X HAY collection in COS London High Street Kensington, Vienna Neubaugasse and Gothenburg as well as online across Europe. On my radar: new finds for the home

This week’s ‘On my radar’ home inspiration post combines eye-catching marbled wallpaper, sleek minimalist dining tables and simple, soft minimal home accessories. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re daring with your pattern, love a classic, timeless design or simply have an unhealthy appetite for buying ceramics (like me!)… Marbled wallpaper by Murals Wallpaper I’m not usually one for pattern or colour but these softly hued marbled wallpapers have caught my eye. Paper marbling dates back to the twelfth century, when artisans used absorbent papers and ink to recreate the finely veined patterns of smooth marble and stone. Designed and sold by Murals Wallpaper, these intricate, hypnotising designs use photography and modern digital printing to blow up the paint effects of marbling onto wallpaper. Use as a feature wall to add instant impact to a room, or wrap around a whole space if you’re brave enough… All prints are custom-sized, made-to-order and priced at £25.00 per square metre. Vipp dining table in two sizes Available in two sizes, Vipp’s new minimalist dining table is designed to withstand …

Soft Edge by Iskos-Berlin for HAY

On my radar: 5 furniture finds

In the second of my regular ‘On my radar’ posts, I share my latest favourite furniture finds that have popped into my inbox or I’ve discovered while out and about. This week we have Scandinavian moulded plywood chairs, customisable bespoke furniture and inventive solutions for the everyday from the end-of-year student shows… Soft Edge by Iskos-Berlin for HAY Soft Edge is a collection of lightweight moulded plywood chairs by Danish design duo Iskos-Berlin. Described by HAY as the next step in the development of moulded plywood techniques, the chairs feature a softly shaped seat and back. Subtly curved edges on the seat and back gently face away from the body, while legs come in a slender steel or a chunkier wooden frame. They’re stackable and light, perfect for cafes and canteens or for space-saving home interiors.    Orlo Mirrors Collection by Another Brand Orlo is a new range of wall and table mirrors made of solid oak and oak veneer, finished with clear or brightly coloured mirrored panels. Palissade collection by the Bouroullec brothers

COS x HAY Garden Collection

I’ve written about the love affair between fashion brand COS and Danish design brand HAY previously, when they presented a carefully curated collection of objects together back in autumn last year. Now, with summer finally approaching, they’ve added to that edited-down set of Scandi-style designs with garden furniture and accessories. From grey plant pots and glass bowls to minimal metal chairs and trays for summer entertaining, there’s plenty of easy ways to bring the simple, modern style of the two brands outside in the open air. Central to the updated collection is a set of anthracite-shaded chairs and benches by the French design duo Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. Developed over the course of two years, this Palissade collection is made from powder coated steel and includes a dining chair, low lounge chair, table, ottoman and bench. Classical in form yet simple in construction, the slatted designs are elegant and timeless while modern and light at the same time – I can equally see them in a overgrown floral garden in the countryside or a sleek modern terrace in the city, or …

Styled: COS x HAY’s curated collection

Beautifully simple and modern clothing brand COS has been subtly working with contemporary Danish design firm HAY for years, you might have seen their minimal HAY rails used in stores to display clothing for example. But in an exciting move, the two Scandi-style brands are teaming up to present a carefully curated collection of objects, available online and spread out in all their neat and organised glory in the COS Kensington High Street store. COS heads of design Karin Gustaffson and Martin Andersson have handpicked items from the HAY range, from their distinctive, colourful trays to unusual glassware, porcelain cups and cotton quilts – ‘We made sure we selected items from across the HAY range so that there’s something for every room, occasion and price point, we like to describe it as HAY seen through the eyes of COS,’ says Andersson. Mette + Rolf Hay, the co-founders of HAY add: ‘At HAY we see ourselves in between fashion and architecture and in working with COS we feel like we have found a perfect home.’ I think this really …

10 things to see and do at London Design Festival 2014

London Design Festival is just around the corner and it promises to be bigger and better than ever. This year’s theme is ‘Lose Yourself’, encouraging people to get lost in the city and discover new things. The programme ranges from major international exhibitions to trade events, installations to talks and seminars, from product launches to receptions, private views and parties, and the majority of events are free of charge! There are over 300 events across the capital, so I’ve done the hard work for you and picked out 10 must-see events (highlighted in a little handy map below). Enjoy! Download this year’s guide here. 1. HAY Mini Market at Selfridges For ages I have longed for the Danish shop HAY to settle in London. This is a chance to have a small slice of its pie; they’re setting up shop in Oxford Street’s Selfridges for the duration of the festival. The supermarket-inspired shop, first presented during the Salone del Mobile in Milan, will offer a range of HAY and WRONG FOR HAY accessories, including glassware, stationery, …

Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for HAY

French design duo Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have unveiled a new collection for Danish furniture manufacturer HAY. The furniture collection for the University of Copenhagen in Denmark includes a wooden chair, a bar stool and several tables. The starting point for this series is based on an old university chair, inspired by the architect Bernt Pedersen’s trestle chair. Due to the symmetrical frames, the chairs and tables both stack vertically. They say: This chair is a simple and beautiful chair with an uncomplicated identity. In our interpretation we have upheld the original chair typology and sought to maintain the compelling simplicity of the original chair. Images: Bouroullec studio
