Styling the Seasons: April

This month’s Styling the Seasons is just a little bit special: Apartment Apothecary and Lotts and Lots have teamed up with at{mine} (an online community for home and design lovers – cue endless interiors inspiration – the site’s beta at the moment but there’s a special invite code ‘StylingSpringAtMine’ for you lovely readers to use here…) for the second Styling the Seasons event. They’ve asked eight lucky at{mine} bloggers (including me!) to judge a competition to win a place at a floral wreath making workshop taught by the uber-talented Caroline from Wild Rubus, using flowers from the lovely Bloom & Wild (more details on how to join in at the bottom of the post).

Each judge was sent a box of beautiful Bloom & Wild flowers to use in their Styling the Seasons post for April. I don’t think I’ve ever had flowers sent through the post, so you can understand my excitement when I came home from work and saw it sitting on my doorstep waiting for me (The flowers are packaged in a thin rectangular box that can fit through letter boxes meaning you don’t have to be home to receive them – clever!). Inside, there was a wonderful pink selection of wax flowers, lilies, alstromeria and lisianthus – the smell was so fragrant.

At first I wasn’t sure what to do for my styling, April for me means Easter and all that entails: Spring flowers, new life, warmer weather, an extra hour of sunlight and of course chocolate! But I had already gone full-out Easter for my Urban Jungle Bloggers post last week. As I won’t be spending Easter in the flat I decided to style something quite simple on my dining table – tea for one with a side of mini easter eggs. And to be honest the flowers are so beautiful by themselves, I didn’t really need to do much – I wanted them to be the stars of the show. So I assembled them in some rustic stoneware bottles, keeping their leaves a little wild and made a little still life (I may also have been influenced by watching Girl with the Pearl Earring the night before and seeing Vermeer carefully line up a still life – inspiration can come from the oddest places sometimes!).

I really like how it’s turned out, the pink eggs pop out, they almost look like they could have been photoshopped, and the flowers have vibrance and movement. Plus the light was so good they needed hardly any editing at all. What do you think? What are your plans for Easter?

In the end I thought this stone jar looked quite nice on its own, after all they do say less is more. It’s still sitting on my dining table (I can’t say the same for the eggs…) and I keep admiring them, they look so lovely against the light grey wall and white table.
