We’ve got a lovely, warm beige home in Gothenburg for today’s ‘I wish I lived here’. Or should that be greige? Either way, beige or greige, it ticks every box for me – period details, check, white-washed floorboards, check, neutral walls that form a backdrop for the furniture and artwork to sing, check. The look is clean and simple but cosy and welcoming at the same time, striking a balance between bare, smooth surfaces and a rich palette of tactile materials.
But, here, neutral doesn’t have to mean dull and boring – the homeowners, or more likely the stylists, have used one-off pieces of vintage furniture and abstract wall art to add character and quirky details. Those metal silver chairs with their natural leather seats, their curves mirrored in the three prints above the sofa. A shaggy rug to soften the clean lines. Ochre cushions and amber glassware to add a complementary pop of colour.
I don’t like to bow down to trends – this is still a very timeless look – but this space does feel like part of a move I’m seeing in Scandinavian homes whereby the living room is almost treated like an art gallery, pairing quirky, one-off pieces of furniture with objects that blur the boundaries between sculpture and design. Top marks if you also have a plinth with a piece of art on it (this place doesn’t and I don’t think it really needs much more otherwise it might start to look cluttered).
The kitchen is clean and minimal, with white cupboards reaching all the way up to the ceiling (always a clever move to maximise space). What caught my eye was this kitchen island-cum-workbench-cum-dining table, a clever piece of multi-functional kit for the person who loves to cook and entertain. There’s drawers to hide essentials, space underneath to give the illusion of space and provide a bit of leg room for the stools, plus an extra bit of worktop that can be propped up if needed. A friend of ours said he recently put a high table with stools in his kitchen; everyone gathers around it and it becomes more like a chef’s table.
The bedroom, again, is pared-back, with an inviting bed dressed in light brown linen. Matching the headboard to the bed linen creates a calm, cohesive look.
