Copenhagen is up there at the top of my favourite cities – this stylish Scandinavian city has the perfect combination of beautiful architecture, considered design, friendly, down-to-earth people and a lovely, relaxed ambience. It makes the ideal weekend break if you want to live like the Danes do, taking a slower pace and enjoying the good things in life; whether it’s sitting by the tranquil waterfront, nursing a coffee in a quiet, cosy cafe, sampling its world-class cuisine, wandering the picturesque streets or popping into any number of cool interior shops to pick up a little something to take home.
Central to Copenhagen’s identity is its design heritage; a city that’s proud of its culture and history of quality craftsmanship, from Arne Jacobsen’s buildings, through Finn Juhl’s furniture, to Georg Jensen’s silverware. Design for the Danes is democratic and accessible to all – at once both beautiful and functional – whether it’s seen in the galleries of a museum or in the simple, everyday surroundings of the home.
With that ethos in mind, Danish design brand Georg Jensen is giving one very lucky winner the chance to WIN a trip for two in Copenhagen.
The winner will receive two return flights, one night stay in a hotel, dinner for two in one of Copenhagen’s most famous restaurants and a private tour of the iconic Georg Jensen Silversmithy. Sounds like a dream trip right? To enter, simply visit one of Georg Jensen’s London stores and leave your contact details on one of their customer cards. The winner will be chosen at random in a prize draw on 28th March 2019 (see below for the terms and conditions and find out more here).
While we’re dreaming of a trip to Copenhagen, I thought I’d give you a little run down of my perfect weekend in the Danish capital to give you a bit of travel inspiration and wanderlust. I’ve been a number of times and often return to my favourite design places time and time again, so here’s the pick of the best:
Day 1 – coffee shops, culture and history
– Whenever I arrive in Copenhagen I make a beeline straight for Cafe Atelier September – they do possibly the best avocado toast ever and the light-filled surroundings instantly make me feel at ease. Try to bag a window table, it’s the perfect vantage point for people watching.
– While you’re near the old town of Copenhagen, wander along the pretty backstreets and take in some of the city’s history. Stop by the Rundetaarn, where a gently winding ramp will guide you up the 35m-tall tower to a viewing platform overlooking the city.
– Escape urban life for a moment or two and head to the botanical gardens – a green oasis with 27 glasshouses to explore, including the old Palm House built in 1874.
– If you get peckish and are looking for lunch, make your way to Torvehallerne food market, where you’ll find over 60 stalls selling everything from artisan coffee and cinnamon buns to smørrebrød open sandwiches and tasty tacos.
– Head back down south, towards the harbour and you’ll find a cluster of museums. My favourite is Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, a charming museum that displays both ancient and modern art in unique surroundings that fuses the old with the new. Marble statues and antiquities are framed against rich colours, spectacular materials and magnificent architecture. At the heart of the institution is the winter garden and cafe, the perfect spot for a moment of quiet contemplation and rest. It’s worth noting it’s free on Tuesdays.
– Walk back through the museums and along the harbour to Nyhavn, the city’s famous 17th-century waterfront. You’ve probably seen this row of colourful, old buildings numerous times on Instagram before – it’s a bit of a touristy hot spot – but it’s worth passing through to get a feel for old Copenhagen.
– Hop over the bridge to Christianshavn and finish the day by watching the sunset from Nærvær vinbar and restaurant. Designed by Norm Architects, it’s a minimalist but cosy space in a contemporary building overlooking the canal.
Day 2: escape the city for a final dose of culture
– There’s two choices that are a little further out of the city – Ordrupgaard Museum and Finn Juhl’s house, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.
– The modernist house of architect Finn Juhl can be found in the grounds of Ordrupgaard Museum to the north of the city. Complete with furniture and his personal collection of arts and crafts, it’s like he never left the humble building. Ordrupgaard Museum itself features a stunning, organically shaped extension by Zaha Hadid and a sculpture garden that’s free to wander around. (Please note the museum is currently closed while a new extension by the Norwegian architects Snøhetta is being built. It will reopen in 2020. The park is still open.)
– Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is perhaps my favourite museum in the world (I wrote about it here). Located 25 miles north of Copenhagen (about 45 minutes by train) in Humlebaek, it’s a lovely mid-century modernist building set in the woodland overlooking the Øresund sound, the stretch of water that separates Denmark and Sweden. Designed by architects Jørgen Bo and Wilhlem Wohlert and opened in 1958, it comprises a series of pavilions and corridors, visually connecting visitors to the landscape outside.
– Once back in the city centre, make sure to fit in a spot of shopping. My favourite design shops are HAY House, Stilleben, Illum Bolighus and Georg Jensen, which can all be found clustered along the main shopping street. Further afield, there’s also Frama, a beautiful, considered concept store housed in the former home of St. Pauls Pharmacy.
And that’s all the elements needed for the perfect design weekend in Copenhagen I think. I hope that’s helped whisk you away your routine and given you a little bit of escapism. Have you been to Copenhagen before? If not, maybe now is the ideal opportunity to enter Georg Jensen’s competition and cross your fingers for a trip of your own.
