I’m currently on my way to Milan to see all that’s new in the interiors world at the design event of the year – the Salone del Mobile and Milan Design Week. You can come with me and catch a glimpse of the products, exhibitions and installations that I see on Instagram, but in the meantime, it’s time for another ‘On my radar’ post. This monthly, pick of the best series rounds up any furniture launches and new designs that have caught my eye in the past few weeks. Let’s go!
New outdoor collection from Swoon Editions
I was browsing Swoon’s website the other day when I came across their new outdoor collection and my oh my is it dreamy! Designed in-house, it’s their first foray into garden furniture and I think you’re going to love it. Think clean, simple lines, streamlined shapes and minimalist black frames.
My favourite is the Kennington garden chair and footstool with it’s geometric, black, box frame and plump ivory cushions. The super thin structure is made from matt powder coated steel and the cushion is made of durable teflon-coated acrylic. There’s also the more curvaceous Finsbury chair which comes in six colour ways and a rocking version. If it’s a table and chairs you’re after, look no further than the Upton chairs with their lozenge-shaped backs and the round Abney table with its sleek legs and glass top (inspired by the cross on hot cross buns!).
A new collection of greys and neutrals from Mylands
It can be incredibly difficult to find that perfect shade of grey. But with 24 subtle architecture-inspired shades in Mylands‘ new Greys & Neutrals colour palette, there’s bound to be one that’s the right neutral for you and your home. The London-based, family-run paint manufacturer has just introduced 20 brand new shades, taking its collection to more than 170 colours.
The new collection offers a timeless, considered range of soft, calming neutrals, from classic greys and delicate pinks to creamy beiges and putty tones. ‘The new hues combine to create simple harmonies in the home and provide a versatile backdrop to any interior,’ Mylands says.
The colours come in Mylands Marble Matt emulsion that uses super-fine ground marble powder to create its signature, hard wearing finish. A 2.5l tin is £46 and a 5l tin is £81. Also available in Wood & Metal, Floor paint and Masonry finishes.
And if you head to their website, you can read an interview with me!
New accessories from HAY
Seeing HAY at the Palazzo Clerici was one of the highlights of Milan Design Week last year. I don’t think they’ll have such a big show this year but their Spring accessories collection is one to bookmark. This series, for the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and office, is wonderfully simple and functional with everyday products that you’ll use over and over again.
I love the speckled design of the Enamel collection. Available in a variety of colours, shapes and sizes, they’re perfect for everyday meals inside and picnics outside. The plain Bubble vase and hand-blown Moroccan glasses also caught my eye for summer styling and alfresco suppers outside.
For outside, HAY’s Botanical Family comprises a series of circular plant pots and saucers in ceramics and brass. The clean, handle-free watering can by Shane Schneck is ideal for small spaces and balconies.
Lastly, made in durable polypropylene, Thomas Bentzen’s Shade Bin comes in several soft colours and features a facet pattern that takes this utilitarian object from simple to stylish.
New Furniture Series from Mleko Living
Kraków-based design studio Mleko Living has unveiled a new series of furniture that will appeal to the minimalists out there. The brand was founded by architects Katarzyna Goluszka and Michal Zaluski back in 2016 (you may remember their beautiful stoneware from another post). Their ethos brings together a utilitarian aesthetic with natural materials and high quality manufacture. Their designs are made to order in Poland and take 4-6 weeks to make.
The Faculty Desk instantly caught my eye – I’ve been trying to source something very similar for a client but everything I found seemed either too chunky and heavy or too shiny. I love how this design combines the tactility of natural oak with the elegance of slender, powder coated steel legs. Available in three colour combinations including luxurious black, the soft grain of the wood gives the piece warmth and character. There’s a discreet drawer for those desk essentials.
Pivot is a lovely, round coffee table that’s faultless in its simplicity. The name refers to its rotational construction – one screw holds the flat-packed steel frames into a stable base. Sealed with natural oils, the top is made of solid spruce wood with natural oak veneer. Black would be my top choice.
Available in black or white, the Attaché side table has a heavy marble base and lightweight steel top. Timeless and elegant, it would be perfect next to the sofa for a few magazines and your coffee cup.
That’s all for now. I’ll be back with a round-up of finds, trends and the latest furniture finds from Milan shortly. Does anything here catch your eye? Let me know if there’s any type of furniture you’d particularly like to see?
