Each month I share a curated edit of my favourite simple homeware and minimalist designs. For February’s edition I thought I’d focus solely on vintage objects and secondhand furniture from my favourite online retailers and independent antique sellers.
I love mixing old and new in my own home – I find that those more unusual finds, that no one else might have, make for a more characterful home. I want the objects I surround myself with to tell a story, so I can instantly bring to mind that special moment when I discovered that favourite, much-loved piece in a flea market or on my travels. I think there’s a misconception that secondhand furniture and vintage items are for more eclectic, bohemian-style homes, but I think there’s a place for them in simple, minimalist interiors too. It’s just about choosing well and having a few key items that set the scene – like my mid-century armchair, below, a bargain eBay find from several years ago.
Buying preloved, secondhand furniture is also one of the more sustainable options (obviously not buying anything and cherishing what you already have is even better, but sometimes you might need a certain piece, if you’re redecorating or looking to replace something). There’s so many chairs in the world and plenty that have already been designed well with high quality materials. Mid-century designs are known for their quality craftsmanship and an antique find is likely to hold (or even increase) its value, unlike a high street buy.
I’ve already written ‘6 of the best places to buy secondhand furniture online’ and to that I’d add these independent vintage stores:
– Push//Pull
– Kinship + Kind
– Early Bird London
– Owl and the Elephant
– Retro Living
– Home Barn
– Tat London
– Design Vintage
– Modern ID
Here I’ve rounded up over 30 pieces of secondhand furniture and homewares from across the internet, from vintage medical cabinets and 1950s armchairs to antique botanical prints and vintage linen cushions. Simply click on the ‘buy now’ button to be taken through to each seller’s buying page.
