Reconnect: Northern’s Spring/Summer 2022 collection

For Norwegian brand Northern, the new Spring season means reconnecting with friends, family and our own surroundings. ‘From multi-functional furniture to beautiful lighting, everything we do is about bringing joy and meaning to these connections,’ says founder Ove Rogne.

For Spring/Summer 2022, Northern has released a series of minimally-designed products that are clean and contemporary. Since starting out in lighting, Northern has grown its collection to include expandable tables, curvaceous sofas, wooden dining chairs, sleek storage cabinets and more.

Northern’s simple designs are streamlined in form with a strong design identity that pairs bold, graphic shapes with contrasting textures and rich, well-crafted materials. They say: ‘Our creative reach goes beyond our Norwegian heritage to meet the modern need for laid-back luxury and cutting-edge cool. Northern’s designs can energise and inspire, create a relaxing mood, or set the scene for a soothing backdrop. My favourite new release for 2022 is the Daybe Dining Sofa, a development of their existing Daybe daybed. Designed by Norwegian design duo Morten & Jonas, the sofa version features a lightweight powder-coated frame with a comfy quilted seat and backrest. Paired with a simple dining table, it offers a more laid-back style of seating, which perhaps suits a need for multi-functional spaces to now cater for different uses, such as working, reading or eating. And I think the bold form gives more substance and permanence to a dining area. It’s available with a white or black metal base, with a choice of upholstery in light grey, dark grey, light brown and grey blue.

The Daybe dining sofa is a natural fit with the new Expand dining table, which comes in either a rectangular or circular shape. The adaptable design by Sami Kallio features a smooth extension system that can expand the table by up to 100cm. It comes in a white oiled, smoked oak or black painted oak finish.

New lighting for 2022 includes a couple of re-editions of design icons. The Butterfly wall lamp was first created by Norwegian designer Sven Ivar Dysthe in the Sixties. The eye-catching design is now available in black or aluminium, with a plain or perforated finish. Designed in 1954, the Dokka Pendant Lamp by Birger Dahl was the first Norwegian lamp to receive a gold medal at the prestigious Triennale di Milano. Northern have introduced a new colour palette for the Dokka lamp, to include classic steel, soft brass, warm beige, matte black and matte white.

Morten & Jonas have also created the Blush Pendant Rail as an addition to the pendant lamp and wall lamp in the same series. Perfect for over a dining table or kitchen island, the pendant rail is made from a powder coated steel tube, with a set of either three or five small opal acrylic diffusers. It comes in matt white, matt black and warm beige.
