Are you in the Christmas mood yet? It’s very nearly time for the first mince pie of the season and perhaps a carol or two on the radio. I love this time of year – it brings cosiness to the dark, grey days and comfort when it’s cold and chilly outside. And this year is extra magical as my two year old daughter takes in the wonders of Christmas with joy and delight in her eyes!
Fully embracing all things festive, I’ve been getting my home ready for the Christmas season with the help of Very. Now we have the new extension and all the additional space, it makes me want to go all out with the decor. Before we never really had the space for a large Christmas tree, so it feels exciting to be able to decorate our home properly and really embrace all things merry and bright.
Today I’m sharing some simple Christmas decor ideas that you can easily recreate at home. I love bringing the natural world inside and creating a Scandi-style winter wonderland, with subtle silver tones, festive foliage and lots of twinkly lights. The centrepiece is, of course, the Christmas Tree, enhanced with wintry tree picks to make it look big and bushy. It’s my first time having a faux Christmas tree and I have been suitably impressed with how easy it was to put up. The Helsinki tree comes pre-lit so you don’t even have to battle a tangle of fairy light wires. And I think you’ll agree it looks utterly convincing and magical. I always worried about the waste of a real Christmas tree so I’ll feel much better getting this one out year after year. Faux Christmas trees – I’m a convert!
Next, I like to keep Christmas Decorations simple and pared-back. I definitely take the less is more approach and just a few oversized silver baubles do the trick. I love how they seem to glow with the light. Elsewhere in the house I’ll expand on the minimalist Christmas theme with candles, mini Christmas trees and vases of fresh greenery. For me, it’s all about taking inspiration from nature and creating a feeling of calm and cosiness. Below, I’m sharing my tips for a few simple Christmas decor ideas.

Simple Christmas decor ideas
– Keep your colour palette limited – I think Christmas decor looks so much more cohesive if you have a restricted colour palette of two to three colours. This is definitely more of a minimalist than a maximalist approach, but for me, it creates a distinctive style that can fit into the aesthetic of your home rather than overpowering it.
– Make your tree look fuller with Christmas tree picks – I’m completely new to the idea of the tree picks but they’re a clever way to decorate your tree and create maximum impact without needing a lot of baubles or decorations. I’ve added two different types of picks here – one is faux eucalyptus and one looks like pine branches frosted with snow.
– Less is more – I don’t think you want to overcrowd your Christmas tree too much, it’s also nice to see the shape and the form of the greenery. I think you only really need a couple of types of baubles dotted evenly across the tree – again, ideally in the same colour palette.
– Choose a theme for your wrapping – Match your presents to your Christmas decor by using the same tones and textures. I’ve kept it simple with green and brown paper, wrapped with contrasting paper twine and green labels. It’s subtle and elegant while also drawing out the green tones from the tree.
– Don’t forget a Christmas tree topper – It’s like adding jewellery to complete an outfit. A simple, pre-lit white star adds a finishing touch to the wintry forest theme.
– Use light to create a cosy glow – As the days are darker and the evenings draw in sooner, you want to bring the light in with lamps, tea light holders and candles. Windows are the perfect place to play with light, so they look cosy from both the inside and out – like with this Christmas curtain light. There’s nothing like coming home and seeing the warmth of Christmas tree lights through the window.
– Bring the outside in – I love styling my home with the seasons and making sure it reflects what’s going on in the natural world. I think it helps me reconnect to nature and soothe my wellbeing. For Christmas, that might be anything from a bowl of pine cones to a few sculptural branches in a vase.
– Christmas for all the senses – Decorating for the festive season is all about embracing all of the senses. As well as creating a cosy look, I think you also want to focus on setting the mood with a seasonal scent, whether with a candle or natural room spray.
– Odd numbers only – Objects look much more aesthetically pleasing when grouped in odd numbers, for example one mini Christmas tree or three, rather than two. I think it looks more balanced rather than being too formal.
– Finally, make sure your Christmas decor fits your own unique style. Often I’ll get to Christmas and be desperate to take the decorations down as it just feels like there’s too much ‘stuff’ going on, but I think if you really refine your style and choose Christmas decorations that will tie in with the colours and shapes already in your home, you can more easily create something that makes sense and isn’t jarring. I think it helps to take one theme and refine it down into a clear concept that you can use year after year. Christmas is also about expressing your personality and really making things feel homely. This look feels very ‘me’, but if you love pink and glittery tinsel, then go for it! What matters is that your home is a reflection of you.
