Cate St Hill is an interiors writer, stylist and design consultant based in London. With a background in architecture and journalism, Cate has been writing about design for over 12 years.

It seemed like a good idea at the time… but six

It seemed like a good idea at the time… but six months later and I’ve fallen out of love with these shelves. I liked the idea of displaying all my favourite things but found that they just got dusty and dirty (don’t judge!), weren’t very practical and stupid me, I didn’t think that the corner was just at the right height for my daughter’s head to bump (luckily she never did). If I could I would have installed floor to ceiling shelves with an end piece, maybe even something that would go around the entrance into the kitchen, but alas I don’t have the money for that… For now I’ve found something to store all my best glasses and vintage bits and bobs, stay tuned to see what I’ve replaced these shelves with 💚

[Ad] If you know me well, you might already know that I have a somewhat cautious approach to colour! Subtle little pops of tone suit me well, and of the 18 colours in @bisley_shop collection, Regent has to my favourite. I think of it as a bit like a soft neutral, adding an accent of colour that’s soothing and relaxing. This is the Rowan collection, which also includes a bedside table, three drawer unit and media unit too. It feels weighty and timeless, with solid oak legs and soft close metal drawers I’m still purring over 👌🏼

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK IN KYOTO - bookmark for your trip 📌 it’s been a year since I went to Japan on a research trip for my book The Japandi Home, on perhaps the best trip of my life. At the time I promised a travel guide, but the book got in the way of that (sorry!!), so with three weeks to go until publication (eek!!), here are some of my favourite places that I discovered, a little off the beaten track.

Coffee and matcha ☕️
- @bluebottlejapan - the boundaries of inside and outside are blurred in this rustic cafe by Schemata Architects 🌿
- @kaikadocafe - the perfect spot for a matcha and mochi in this wooden clad cafe by Copenhagen-based OEO studio 🍵
- @clampcoffeesarasa - a seriously cosy space surrounded by plants 🌱
- @arabica.kyoto - if you rise early to see the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest reward yourself with a coffee here ☕️
- @weekenders_coffee - a coffee roaster with a hidden courtyard 🎋
- @waldenwoodskyoto - homemade coffee in a zen, all white interior 🌳
- Ichimonjiya Wasuke - smokey charred mochi in a traditional old cafe that’s been run by the same family for hundreds and hundreds of years 🍡

Eat 🍜
- ENFUSE, at @kyotocitykyoceramuseum - get the tasting plate of delectable Japanese treats 😋
- @curry_koisus - a quaint, narrow restaurant serving bowls of delicious curry and tempura in the old historic district of Gion 🍛
- @aoonigiri - a tiny kiosk along the picturesque Philosopher’s Path serving handmade onigiri rice balls 🍙
- Suba - a simple bar/shop serving warming bowls of soba noodles 🍜
- Gohanya Shinkiro - an authentic Japanese restaurant hidden down a quiet street serving Japanese style tapas 🍚
- Gion Ichiho - a sushi restaurant where each bite brings a new flavour 🍣

Drink 🍷
- @sumi.kyoto - serve yourself a glass of natural wine from this cool, modern bar
- @mon.wine - a gallery and natural wine bar with a minimal interior 👌🏼

I would also add but couldn’t get into:
- Monk - wood fired pizzas in a warm intimate setting
- Farmoon @farmoon_kyoto - a tea salon and tasting menu restaurant in an old machiya house

There were almost too many places to visit in one trip and I have many more saved for my next visit!

[Ad] A spring refresh with @bisley_shop 🌿 – let me introduce you to Bisley’s new colour Regent, a soft green that ties in perfectly with the pistachio trend at the moment 🌳🍃🥑🧩📗🍐🫒🫛🪴As you can probably tell it’s already a colour I use a lot in my own home, from my stairs to my downstairs loo, even my pillowcases and candles! It’s the green thread that ties everything together.

These pale green tones, referencing the tranquility of nature, make for a calm, soothing feel, setting the scene for rest and relaxation. Now the bedroom makeover is done, it feels so good to have a place for everything and everything in its place – after all, tidy space, tidy mind, right?!

Oof the light today! 💫 it was really putting on

Oof the light today! 💫 it was really putting on a show. Honestly it’s so good for the soul. I shot some proper photos of the bedroom today so keep an eye out for those soon! It’s all coming together 🤩 in other news, it was primary school offer day today in the UK, where everyone hears what school they got into for September - by some miracle we got into our first choice, hurray! 🥳 can’t believe those littles are so big now! Hope everyone else got good news 🫶🏼
