As my daughter turns five this week, I’ve been ref As my daughter turns five this week, I’ve been reflecting on what being a mother means to me. Matrescence describes the process of becoming a mother. It’s not just the physical transformation, but the completely life-changing and utterly bewildering metamorphosis that women go through when welcoming a child into the world, which impacts their status, their identity, their independence, their psyche, their sense of self, and their relationships.

After a shaky start, I feel like it’s taken five years to settle into motherhood and be the mother I want to be. In the beginning I lost myself, I lost my marriage, I even lost my dog. Piece by piece, I stitched myself back together again, learning to do motherhood on my own terms and not feel guilty about it. To hold all these different parts of myself while having a feeling of being lost at sea, without a map.

I’ve also never heard ANYONE talk about postpartum rage, so I hope this helps another mother frantically googling at 3am in the morning, wondering why she’s a silent mess of boiling fury and complete vexation at it all ❤️

A little dose of reality - my home isn’t always pe A little dose of reality - my home isn’t always perfectly neat and tidy, and I love both versions of my home just the same, the one where it’s picture perfect and the one where it’s a little more undone, where the floor is lava and there’s dens to be made, where cushions are stepping stones and there’s a pen pot always out. This is what home really means 🥰 it’s the bunnies dressed in fabric samples that does it for me 🥹

The best piece of advice I heard this week? And it The best piece of advice I heard this week? And it really resonated because it’s what I try to capture without really realising it. Your pictures should like someone has just walked out the room - a chair pulled back, a leftover mug, a book open, a gently indented cushion 💚 (thanks @davidwhitecomms!)
Whenever I stay somewhere I’m always taking mental Whenever I stay somewhere I’m always taking mental design notes and that was especially the case @lookingglasslodge - an award winning luxury lodge hidden in the woods in East Sussex. Owners Rik and Lindsey were particularly inspired by biophilic principles, the idea of bringing nature inside to create calm and connection with the outside world. It’s not just about adding more plants, but creating a sensorial experience where you benefit from how you feel when immersed in nature. It’s really easy to recreate in the home, using natural materials, curves, organic forms, green views, adaptive lighting, anything inspired by nature really! 💚 I have a chapter on it in my book The Japandi Home if you’re interested in learning more 🌿

Not quite a Red Thread, but a Green Thread - a cle Not quite a Red Thread, but a Green Thread - a clever interiors trick where you repeat a certain colour, element, pattern or shape from room to room to create an overall feeling of calm and cohesion. When people say, ‘your home always looks so tranquil’ I can tell you it’s because I’ve used this one element (green) to tie everything together, so my home as a whole feels grounded and of the same design language. Almost like rooms ‘speak’ to one another, sharing a commonality that feels soothing and familiar. Read more on today’s substack! 💌
