HOW TO mix different woods together 🪵🪜🪑🌿 I often g HOW TO mix different woods together 🪵🪜🪑🌿 I often get asked about the rules of mixing different wood finishes together in a home. And what I really want to say? Don’t worry too much about rules, or do this, do that, wood finishes go together precisely because they are made of the same material. And honestly in a minimal space, the more texture the better! That is what will add richness and character to a room and prevent it from feeling flat. But if you want a little guidance, here are a few tips: make sure there’s a contrast in tone or texture, understand the different wood families and find other ways to bring harmony, for instance with a unifying style. It’s all about balance! 💚 more on Substack at catesthill.substack.com
[Ad] Sharing some stills of my finished bedroom - [Ad] Sharing some stills of my finished bedroom - it now looks so serene and cosy now thanks to @cotswoldco Winson light oak bedside tables and lots of layered textures. I think my colour palette and aesthetic is slowly getting warmer (I’m not a stark minimalist anymore!) and this really works here to create that sanctuary like feel. Here are three tips for a cosy bedroom:
- lighting is a small thing but will have the biggest impact, choose shades that give a soft glow and warm white bulbs - I love oversized lamps to add impact 💡
- mix and match bedding and layer pillows and cushions to add tactility - the more texture the better!
- storage is key - you don’t want to see all your clutter as you’re trying to nod off 😴 negative space is as important as the objects you choose, especially in a bedroom, as it allows space for your eyes to rest 🤍

No place I’d rather be 🤍 than this little urban oa No place I’d rather be 🤍 than this little urban oasis. I find this space so calming, I think it’s the combination of the lush foliage outside, the neutral walls to give my eyes something to rest with, the natural materials that feel tactile and soothing. What makes you feel calm? 💫

A vulnerable one today 😬 and something I haven’t r A vulnerable one today 😬 and something I haven’t really shared but this week - doing two panel talks in one week, something that scares the sh** out of me, public speaking!! - made me reflect back on how far I’ve come 💪🏼 that I can turn my story around and talk about wellbeing in the home (as an expert!! with brands like @nkukulife) and inspire people to create their own sanctuary at the home feels incredibly rewarding. And I did it, even if it scared me, even if I told myself I can’t do it, I showed up, spoke eloquently and passionately, and it wasn’t half as bad as it was in my head. The only way to get over your fears is to face them, and nerves just means it means something to you, otherwise you wouldn’t feel anything. A home means so much more to me than just how it looks, it’s a sanctuary to recharge the batteries and be able to go back out into the world again 💚

(and here’s some beautiful homewares - marking as an AD but they didn’t exactly ask me to share all my problems 🤪😂)

Thank you @vintagecuratorinteriors and @ninageeathome for the snaps! 🥰 and thank you @nkukulife for an inspiring day and letting me be part of it 💚
[Ad] I contributed to a book! 📖 A beautiful coffee [Ad] I contributed to a book! 📖 A beautiful coffee table book by @carpediembedsofsweden called ‘Bedrooms as Sanctuaries: a journey into the art of stillness, design and the timeless pursuit of restful living’, with lots of sleep tips and inspiration for calm bedrooms. I was one of 15 designers and creatives invited to imagine my dream bedroom - surely the best brief you could ask for, no constraints, no budget, just pure imagination! I envisioned a calm, tactile sanctuary inspired by soothing Japandi influences, with a wooden boutique hotel style bed and a green ceiling - to feel like you’re sleeping in a forest. Now if someone could just transport me there 💤💭🛌

I also took part in a panel in celebration of the new book with @designanthology_uk 💪🏼 what a week - I need a lie down!
[Ad] I’ve finally found the perfect bedside tables [Ad] I’ve finally found the perfect bedside tables, after a year and a half of indecision! Now my bedroom is complete, everything coming together to feel calm and considered. The Winson bedside tables by @cotswoldco in light oak feel timeless with their mid-century inspired design and handleless, soft-close drawers (so I can hide away that clutter!). I’ve also layered up the texture, with natural jute and terracotta table lamps, handwoven textured cushions, a luxe cashmere-blend throw and a seagrass basket for books still to read. The result is tactile and just the kind of sanctuary I need right now. What do you think? You can find all the links on stories 💚 #cotswoldco
