At the weekend I went to the lovely At the Chapel in Bruton, Somerset. Previously a 17th-century coaching inn, At the Chapel is a modern hotel on Bruton High Street housing a bakery, wine shop, cafe, bar and restaurant, all rolled into one. Apparently, Bruton and nearby Frome are on the up, and even more so, now that a new Hauser & Wirth art gallery (they also have galleries in London and New York) is planned for a farm on the outskirts of Bruton.
At the Chapel has pitched it just right– the central space features a restaurant aimed at being both sophisticated and affordable, they have bang-on-trend wood-fired pizzas as well as more upmarket steaks and other dishes, while the space also doubles up as a coffee shop during the day and a place for the local community to meet; yummy mummies or business men having meetings. After all, chapels were meeting places…
The decor is understated and simple; white walls and sleek contemporary art. The bedrooms are minimal, with just what you need: a big bed, some art books to read, rugs to soften the stained wood floors, a deep bath for a hot soak and best of all, fresh croissants delivered to your door for breakfast.
