Sputnik Lamps by Julie Lansom

I fell in love with these jewel-like lamps by Parisian designer and photographer Julie Lansom as soon as they popped up on my Pinterest feed (and doesn’t she look the epitome of Parisian cool, below…).

They’re made from geometric wooden frames with intricately threaded cotton string. I certainly wouldn’t have the patience to make them myself, but they look like beautiful little lanterns, come from outer space; even more so when they are lit up at night. She told L’ArcoBaleno recently that they were inspired by a 1960s lamp, which she discovered thanks to her art dealer dad and their love of bric-a-brac hunting. ‘The objects I make are a combination of vintage and modern,’ she says.

What started out as a side project for friends and family, has now turned into the working commissions of today. She’s currently showing the lamps at Now! le Off at the Cité de la Mode et du Design during this week’s Parisian Design Week (until September 13).
