Ida Kar- Bohemian Photographer 1908-1974

From the 10th March to the 19th June 2011, the National Portrait Gallery in London is hosting an exhibition of portraits by the famous twentieth-century photographer, Ida Kar. The Whitechapel Art Gallery displayed the first retrospective exhibition of her work in 1960 and now, fifty years later, the National Portrait Gallery is hoping to present her famous portraiture to a newer and younger audience. Amongst the photographs I am most looking forward to, are the portraits of artists and writers in their own surroundings, which offer an intriguing insight into their creative space. During the 1950’s Kar’s home of Litchfield Street in Soho became a hotspot for bohemians, artist and socialites. Included in the total of 70 portraits, are Iris Murdoch, Bridget Riley, Henry Moore and George Braque.
