Whilst in Paris last week, I had the opportunity to see the Diane Arbus exhibition at the Jeu de Paume. Diane Arbus (New York, 1923-1971) was a renowned 20th century photographer, who captured various characters in New York during the 1950s and 1960s. The exhibition is the first major retrospective of her work in France, displaying a selection of approximately 200 black and white photographs drawn from the museum and private collections. Her photography uncovers the familiar in the unconventional; exposing her subject’s characters in a vulnerable, but at the same time, mysterious light. In the artist’s own words, “a photograph is a secret about a secret. The more it tells you the less you know.”
