British designer Faye Toogood has designed a range of furniture inspired by icons of rural life for Matter in New York. The range, titled Batch series, is a collection manufactured using the concept of batch production. The collection features a glass table floating on three different shaped elements as well as a chair inspired by the handle of a spade and a wooden stool based on a milkmaid’s three-legged seat.
Faye Toogood said: “The spade is an icon of rural life in the English countryside. The Spade Chair is a modern tool for sitting. Made in Britain using Ash, the chair has an elegant and minimal silhouette inspired by the juxtaposition of a three-legged milking stool and the handle of a gardening implement.”
“The Element Table comprises a simple tinted glass top floating on three ‘elements’ or ‘legs’: a white cube that highlights the color of the glass, a pure color sphere, and a cylinder of textured wood.”
“The Spade Stool is a modern reinvention of a traditional three-legged milking stool. Its elegant and minimal silhouette is constructed using traditional joinery techniques.”
“The Trestle Table, designed to work alongside the Spade Chair, features a solid wood tabletop, resting on folding ash trestle legs constructed using the familiar Spade dowel profile.”
“The Spade Side Table is turned from a mono block of wood. The base has a simple brass peg system that allows the glass tabletop to float at different heights, which can be changed easily by the user.”
