Here’s my pick of three things to do this week- from a Hackney wide jumble sale to the fashion photography of Erwin Blumenfeld at Somerset House and a funny Greta Gerwig film.
STOP
What: Hackney Sale Trail
Where: Hackney, London
When: August 4
This Sunday, Hackney residents are setting up stalls in their front gardens to sell their forgotten treasures. Everything from vintage clothing and furniture to homemade marshmallows will be available to purchase. Bargain hunters can navigate their own trail through the streets of Hackney with the aid of a downloadable map providing each stall location from a big jumble inside Clapton Square to boats along the River Lea.
LOOK
What: Blumenfeld Studio: New York, 1941-1960
Where: Somerset House, London
When: Until September 1
This exhibition looks at one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century, Erwin Blumenfeld and his latter works from his career in New York. Having produced an extensive body of work throughout his thirty-five year career, it was in the USA, after the war in the context of economic growth and a buoyant and expanding press, that Blumenfeld’s work flourished. This exhibition celebrates the output of his Central Park studio during the Second World War and post-war boom years, including fashion photography, advertising campaigns, personality portraits, ‘war effort’ propaganda posters and experimental works.
LISTEN
What: Frances Ha
Where: Curzon Cinemas, London
When: Various dates
The brilliant and funny Greta Gerwig stars as Frances, an exuberant late-twenty something who lives in New York and longs to be a choreographer and to dance with an acclaimed company. Her friend Sophie (Mickey Sumner) works in publishing and appears more level- headed. When Sophie announces she is moving out of the apartment they share, Frances’ life is turned upside down. A comic coming-of-age story shot in black and white.
