Last week I discovered, not only a fab Canadian magazine Uppercase, but the beautiful work of Toronto-based artist Carly Waito. Her paintings are unbelievably realistic, zooming in on the intricate details of mineral specimens Carly has collected over the years. They look like photographs, such is Carly’s skill of capturing light and shadow and each rock’s small scars and crevices.
With each finely detailed painting, Waito “focuses the eye on a specimen’s particular qualities, showing the beauty and magic that is present even in nature’s tiniest objects, if one looks closely enough and with a curious mind”.
You can see her work on her website http://www.carlywaito.com/wp/ or on her lovely blog http://carlywaito.blogspot.co.uk/.
Her work can also be found at Narwhal Projects http://www.narwhalprojects.com/ in Toronto, Canada.
