This weekend I’m hopping off to Morocco (look out for a post next week for photos!) I’ve never been and I’m very excited to check out the markets. In the meantime, here’s three things to check out in London, from a bike tour around East London courtesy of Ace Hotel Shoreditch and tokyobike, to an eery visit to Van Gogh’s former home in Brixton, and an exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery.
STOP
What: Saskia Olde Wolbers: Yes, These Eyes are the Windows
Where: Artangel 87 Hackford Rd, SW9 0RE
When: Until June 22
A blue plaque on the front of an innocuous terraced house in Brixton commemorates its past resident, a young man by the name of Vincent van Gogh, a tenant from 1873 until 1874. Now artist Saskia Olde Wolbers opens this door to the public and invites them in to uncover an oral history of one man’s time in the house.
LOOK
What: Chris Marker: A Grin Without a Cat
Where: Whitechapel Gallery, London
When: Until June 22
Visionary French filmmaker Chris Marker (1921–2012) created vivid film-essays that lace realism with science fiction and lyricism with politics. Changing his name, declining to be photographed or interviewed, Marker was both enigma and legend. This exhibition takes us on a journey through the themes that absorbed him – the museum, travel, film, revolution and war.
LISTEN
What: East end London bike tours with tokyobike and Ace Hotel London
Where: Meet in the lobby of Ace Hotel, London
When: Free and open to the public every month, 10am until 1pm
Next dates 24th May and 14th June
Ace Hotel has teamed with cult bike brand tokyobike to provide free bike tours throughout May and June around their patch of East London. Writer and brand consultant Duncan Riches will lead the tours, which will include a stop off at the workshops of local craftsmen, a ride down the Regents Canal and a visit to Denys Lasdun’s modernist block of flats in Bethnal Green. Once back in the Ace Lobby, be sure to cool off with a fresh juice from Lovage.
