I haven’t written about things to do in London for what seems like ages, I used to create ‘Stop Look Listen: Three things to do this week’ posts each Friday, but as with many of these things, it seemed to fall by the wayside. But… stop, look and listen to this for the moment, because it is one not to be missed…
Are you a foodie, who like me, likes nothing more than good food and good company? A little bit adventurous and willing to try something new? Then forget your boring Saturday night takeaway, cosy dinners for two and the ordinary restaurants in London that everyone has been to (and that everyone has instagrammed). If you’re looking for something a little bit different, then you might be interested in The 200 Club – an experiential, one-off event dreamt up by gastronomic geniuses Bompas & Parr and Barclays Bespoke Offers, a website that curates hundreds of money-saving offers.
Bompas & Parr, set up by Sam Bompas and Harry Parr, are known for their fantastical architectural jellies, but they also create weird and wonderful culinary events. At the moment, for example, they’re hosting the must-see (or must-experience) Alcoholic Architecture, a walk-in gin-and-tonic cloud bar on the site of an ancient monastery in London’s Borough Market. They’ve also created a pop-up chewing gum factory in Dubai, sent coffee beans to space and created a glow-in-the-dark Cornetto… the Willy Wonka’s of the design world you might call them.
They’ve teamed up with Bespoke Offers, which in addition to the 200 Club, has launched 200 great foodie offers, from top-notch gourmet gifts and cookery masterclasses to family-friendly restaurant discounts and afternoon tea and spa treatments for that special someone (yes, please).
The 200 Club is the longest tasting menu in the world. It’s running from 3 September to 4 September and comprises 200 separate courses, sampling everything from blue lotus flower and fermented garlic to truffle bubbles – all served over a 24-hour period in The Factory in Bermondsey. Think, clouds of confection sugar, flourescent jellies, wild game, smouldering wood smoked meats and dark summer fruits. Yum!
Bite-sized culinary delights will lead foodies through the colour-coded menu, from Yellow Breakfast at 8am through to Green Lunch, Pink Dinner and the final piece-de-resistance, the Multicolour Final Countdown. There’s also White Elevenses (expect custards, quiches and shortbread), Purple Five O’Clock Tiffin and Brown Blackout (coffee, chocolate, black garlic, squid ink, soy sauce and liquorice, hopefully not all at the same time…). But, could you last all day and all night?
There’s two types of tickets for the event: Food fanatics can either take on the 24 hour challenge at £2,000 for two people (£1,000 each), receiving a certificate at the end with the title Ultra Diner… OR, there’s also tickets for 10 meals (each consisting of 20 exotic dishes) from £49 per person, including a carafe of wine or two beers.
–> You can buy tickets for the whole experience here, or tickets for the sampling experience here (but hurry, when I last looked there was only 11 left…).
