WOUD is a Danish brand I discovered and fell in love with at the northmodern furniture fair in Copenhagen back in August. They create minimalist furniture, lighting and home accessories, striving to give each product a meaning, purpose and function. From clever storage solutions and designs for compact living to timeless oak dining chairs and contemporary sofas, their products are simply beautiful and beautifully simple.
They say: ‘In our designs, whether it being in form, function or choice of material, we strive to add a touch of innovation while staying true to the simplicity anchored in our Nordic design heritage. Our designs radiate “love at first sight” through colours, textiles and aesthetics.’
This second collection of theirs presents 11 new products designed by a range of international design studios and emerging names. The Pidestall planters, above, for example, were designed by Norwegian designer Emilie Stahl Carlsen, who recently graduated in Product Design from Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences. Created for both indoor and outdoor use, they come in red, grey and deep blue.
The Vowel shelf, below, is by young Japanese designer Keisuke Kawase. He has created a simple modular shelf that can be combined to create a dynamic display. Available in red, dark blue, white and nude, it features a diagonal separator that creates a visual illusion.
Timewatch, below, is designed by 24-year-old designer Agata Nowat, who studied at the De Montfort University in Leicester, England, and the University of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland. Her design combines a mirror and a clock into a simple sculptural shape.
Here are some of my favourites from the new collection, I love the smooth shape of the dining chair and can see those Racket trays fitting in right into my home…
Mirror Box, above, is the design of Danish designer Laura Bilde, whose work is characterised by a Scandinavian simplicity that brings joy into everyday life. Ideal for a hallway, small space or home office, the Mirror Box combines a circular mirror with a shelf to create a beautiful storage display. It comprises four black-painted metal boxes that can be handily moved around on the shelf frame.
The Mono dining chair, below, was first presented at the Cologne furniture fair last year. Designed by Finnish designer Kasper Nyman and produced in Denmark, it has a unique bent shape that gives it a comfortable, cocooning form.
The Polar shelf is by German designer Silvia Terhedebrügg, whose work explores materials, simple forms, graphic aesthetics and poetic analogies. This decorative shelf features a delicate loop that stabilises the design and acts as a mounting bracket. The shelf comes flat packed in two colours, deep red and dusty grey.
These Racket trays by Danish designer Therkel Skou Steffensen are my favourite. Intended for serving and storage, they can be easily stacked, while their handle makes them easy to carry and move from one place to another. Perfect for nibbles when guests come, breakfast in bed or a simple display of candles on the dining table. Don’t know about you, but they’re going straight onto my wishlist!
