I haven’t done a round-up of my favourite new furniture launches and discoveries in a while, but with the start of the year bringing a plethora of new designs I thought I better hop to it! Today we’ve got six finds on my radar, from wire shelving and storage solutions, through abstracts prints and characterful mirrors, to timeless solid wood tables and chairs. Hope you like them…
New from String furniture
We must all be familiar with Swedish design company String furniture, right? Instantly recognisable and minimal in expression, their lightweight, modular shelving system is simple to assemble and easy to reposition into multiple configurations, with additional side panels, cabinets, cupboards and writing tables. It was originally designed by Nils Strinning in 1949 but remains timeless and relevant today.
Styled by Lotta Agaton, these images show the new designs that have been added to the String family. And there’s something for every corner of the house, from shoe storage in the hallway, through mirrored units in the bathroom, to hooks and hanging spaces for glasses in the kitchen – everything you need for an organised, clutter-free home.
Available in the UK from Skandium.
Mimic Mirror from Muuto
Danish brand Muuto has released the new, characterful Mimic Mirror by Paris-based duo Normal Studio. Inspired by the hand-held mirrors that are found in Parisian barber shops, the design features a sculptural resin base and mirror encased in plastic.
‘The inspiration for our work comes from everyday design, taking elements of ordinary use and translating them into our own design language,’ explains Eloi Chafaï, co-founder of Normal Studio with Jean-François Dingjian. ‘Objects should be simple without becoming simplistic. The design should always strive to communicate a clear sensibility, paired with an obvious function.’
Mimic mirror comes in three colours, Nude, Midnight Blue and Grey, and is priced at £125. Available from Clippings.
The Mae table collection By Mölle
I was already familiar with Dutch store and studio By Mölle‘s sustainable textiles and beautiful, recycled blankets (do take a look they’re lovely!), so I was happy to discover they now have a new table collection. They describe the pieces – solid oak and steel tables custom-made to order by a local carpenter – as ‘beautiful, timeless design, crafted with respect for the earth’. Prices start from €245.

Object Blanc Collection 2018 by Atelier Cph
Atelier Cph is a multidisciplinary creative studio based in, you guessed it, Copenhagen. As well as art direction and styling, brand identity and trend forecasting, the company also designs beautiful art prints.
Inspired by research trips to France and Finland, their new Object Blanc Collection references the work of great modernist painters and sculptors such as Fernand Léger, Jean Arp and the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto with collage-style prints and abstract shapes. (I bet you they went to Aalto’s Maison Louis Carré just outside Paris, you can see the pictures from my visit here).
The prints can be purchased from Atelier Cph’s webshop, where prices start from €74.

New launches from Fredericia
One of my favourite Danish brands, Fredericia, has launched eight new pieces to their collection of modern originals of tomorrow. Building on their design heritage, the company collaborates with young, emerging designers and established talent to create contemporary design that is beautifully crafted and aesthetically intriguing.
First up we have the Yksi chair by Thau & Kallio, a lightweight design in oak whose name means no.1 in Finnish and refers to the simple, Y-shaped construction of the delicate legs. There’s also the Din chair by Oeo Studio, a new upholstered dining chair with a slim wooden frame and sharp, sophisticated lines, plus the Eve chair designed by Timo Ripatti, a sculptural lounge chair with a curvilinear wooden seat. Not forgetting new colours of the Trinidad chair by Nana Ditzel to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
Airisto by Joanna Laajisto for Made by Choice
Helsinki-based interior designer and architect Joanna Laajisto has designed a collection of multifunctional tables and benches for Finnish brand Made by Choice. Originally conceived for B&B Villa Airisto on the picturesque Turku Archipelago (set to open this summer), the ash wood designs are simple and modest in expression, united by gently curved feet.
‘A good product has to fit in different environments from the modern and minimalist to rich and classical,’ says Laajisto of the design’s flexible nature.
The side table, stool and bench come in light ash or a rich stained black, while the grain of the wood looks particularly beautiful.
