Last week when I revealed my home office makeover, the focus was on designing a cosy, functional space to work as a freelancer. Today, the attention has turned to another corner of this dual-purpose room – getting the space ready for guests coming to stay and creating a calm, welcoming sanctuary that’s conducive to a good night’s sleep.

We’ve been so pleased with the memory foam mattress in our bedroom, we thought the guest room deserved a simple upgrade too. Because a space doesn’t just have to look good, it needs to function well too, and that starts with the foundations. You can have the loveliest linen, black-out blinds and all the sleep tricks up your sleeve, but if your guests are lying on a dodgy mattress, they’re not going to be rolling out on the right side of the bed come the morning. Our old mattress was a cheap buy that had stuck with me since my student days; simply put, friends and family staying the night deserved better.

That’s where Emma Mattress comes in, an affordable ‘bed-in-a-box’ manufactured here in the UK. Founded in 2015 in Frankfurt, Germany, Emma is a young start-up that is helping revolutionise the mattress industry, making good quality beds more accessible to all. Says founder Max, ‘We believe that sleep is more than just a necessity. We spend a third of our lives in bed so it is essential that our mattress provides the perfect blend of comfort and support to sleep soundly through the night.’

Winner of the trusted Which? Best Buy for Mattresses in 2017, Emma is a one-size-fits-all foam mattress that supports and adapts to the form of your body, whether you sleep on your back, side, tummy or sprawled across the bed like a starfish. With the promise that an Emma mattress can suit everyone, I thought it was the perfect choice for a guest bedroom, so that no matter who visits – an Airbnb guest or a parent with a back problem – they’ll hopefully be well on their way to better sleep.

The simplicity and ease appealed too – instead of going out and trying umpteen (most likely expensive) beds in a shop then waiting two months for a mattress to be made, Emma mattresses can be ordered quickly online and delivered to your door (for free) in 1-2 weeks. They come vacuum-packed in a slim box, ideal for getting up and around small urban spaces. You simply remove the plastic wrapping using the supplied cutter, and voila, the mattress magically rolls out and inflates in a couple of minutes. Leave it a few hours to breathe and it’s ready to be slept on.

Unsure about buying a mattress over the internet? Emma let you try out your mattress for 100 nights and receive a full refund and return if you’re not satisfied. For peace of mind, they also offer a 10 year guarantee.

An Emma mattress is comprised of four layers – a highly breathable Airgocell® foam that allows one area to compress without affecting the rest of the mattress, underneath which is a layer of individual pressure-relieving pocket springs, then a visco-elastic memory foam that adapts to the body’s contours and keeps you comfortable in any position, and finally a firm, supporting bottom layer of cold foam.

Removable and washable, the gently dimpled top cover of climate fibre regulates humidity, while the dark grey side cover gives a smart, stylish finish to the mattress. Side handles make it easier to move around and there’s anti-slip material on the base.

First impressions were how soft the cover was to touch and how fresh and contemporary the mattress looks. I haven’t slept a full night on the mattress yet but with it being right next to the desk, I couldn’t resist a little restorative mid-work nap (I say nap but I’m terrible at napping, it’s more likely to be 15 minutes closing my eyes with Headspace) and coffee break in bed with my dog Francis and some favourite magazines. The mattress feels squidgy, comfortable and inviting – with the one in our bedroom it took a while for it to soften, loose a bit of its firmness and suit our shapes, but this feels supportive and moulds to the body instantly.

But the thing I particularly like about memory foam mattresses is that you feel the movement of the other person in the bed less – when they’re tossing and turning, it doesn’t wake you up and disrupt your sleep. I’m also a fan of the smooth, seamless surface, there’s no buttons or springs poking into your back. The real test though will be when my boyfriend’s parents come to stay in May – I’m so pleased we now have a lovely, cosy space for them to sleep.

The only problem is that it’s going to be a bit of a distraction now – I can certainly see myself dragging my laptop into the bed on lazy days and slow mornings in the home office! And with the sausage’s seal of approval (his favourite place is under a warm duvet or blanket), I don’t think Francis will mind one bit.

Emma are offering my readers £100 off mattresses until the end of April, simply use code CATE100 at the checkout!
