So it’s back to my ‘Your Home Needs This’ series where I profile simple, well-considered design objects that I feel should be on your interiors wish-list, whether it’s a timeless classic or a new product launch.
Last week when I was searching around the internet for rattan armchairs for a ‘Best of’ post, I came across this beautifully handmade design from Rose & Grey and it was love at first sight. It didn’t quite fit with the other designs so I wanted to give it a blog post of its own.
If you’re not familiar with Rose & Grey, they’re a lovely British company that sells a mix of contemporary and vintage furniture. If I’m ever sourcing a unique armchair or well-crafted statement piece for a client, they’re one of my first port of calls as they cater for everything from traditional to mid-century to Nordic styles.
This Malmo Teak & Ramie Chair is simple with a tactile, honest, hand-crafted look and feel about it. The elegant seat and frame is made from light-coloured Sungkai wood, while woven Ramie fibres create a cocooning back rest. I can see it fitting right at home in an English country cottage as much as a minimal Scandinavian interior.
The chair also comes in a two-seater version, which could work well in a hallway or as a kitchen bench. The back has such a welcoming embrace and offers something a little different to a wooden frame.
Both come with natural, textured cushions that have the look of hessian. Perfect against a neutral backdrop with a pop of green from some plants.
Aren’t Rose & Grey’s images beautifully styled? The natural wood looks beautiful and timeless against the grey walls and light floors, but I can also imagine the woven pattern of the chair standing out well against a dark backdrop too. Embrace the texture with natural linen cushions, deep pile rugs and crinkled cotton throws. Cluster two chairs together in a corner of your living room – they’d look great positioned opposite a white linen sofa – or use one to create a standalone statement.
