Here’s my pick of three things to do this week- Zaha Hadid’s new Serpentine Sackler Gallery, a Van Gogh exhibition and Woody Allen’s new film. Enjoy!
STOP
What: Serpentine Sackler Gallery
Where: Hyde Park, London
The Serpentine Gallery’s new exhibition space designed by Zaha Hadid opens to the public this weekend. The Sackler Gallery gives new life to The Magazine, a former 1805 gunpowder store, located five minutes walk from the Serpentine Gallery on the north side of the Serpentine Bridge. The spaces have been restored and a new, bold (like Marmite- you’re either going to love it or hate it) extension added. The gallery opens with an exhibition from young Argentinian artist Adrián Villar Rojas.
LOOK
What: Van Gogh in Paris
Where: Eykyn Maclean, London
When: Until November 29
This exhibition explores the years from 1886 to 1888 when Van Gogh was living and working in Paris before his death in 1890. Van Gogh’s two years in Paris were critical in his transition away from the dark, sombre works of his Dutch period toward the bright colours and expressive handling for which he is best known today.
LISTEN
What: Blue Jasmine
Where: Cinemas across London
When: Various dates
Cate Blanchett takes the lead in Woody Allen’s new film. It details Jasmine’s (Cate Blanchett) fall from New York’s glittering social scene when her husband (Alec Baldwin) is convicted of grand larceny. She is forced to live with her adopted sister (the brilliant English actress Sally Hawkins) in a poor San Francisco district.
