Winter warmers

Winter essentials

As much as I hate the darker evenings and grey skies at this time of year, I love cosying up in lots of layers and seeking the ultimate comfort in chunky knits, cashmere bed socks, warm blankets and cups of tea. I love that feeling when you put on last year’s winter coat, dig your hands into the pockets, find old receipts and momentoes, and wrap the warmth around you. Or when you come home from being cold outside, light all the candles and settle down for a night on the couch. There’s no better word for it than the Danish’s hygge.

In fact, I’m often in danger of being a bit too comfy, and going around in my sloppiest jeans and baggiest jumper (can I not just use my duvet as a coat?!). It’s hard finding those winter wardrobe pieces that are warm and cosy, but stylish and glamorous at the same time, not to mention the winter skin and dry sandpapery hands (not nice). So, without further ado, here are some of the essentials that are helping me get through the colder days:

Native Youth shirt dress

I love this baggy checked shirtdress from British brand Native Youth – I’m not really one for dresses and live mostly in jeans, but this works for lounging about at home, or smartened up with a belt during the day. The autumnal colours are perfect for brightening up my mainly grey and black wardrobe too, as are these blue joggers. This winter, I’ve also invested in a decent hat from Danish label Norse Projects (available at Goodhood London) and let me tell you this lambswool beanie is the best thing I’ve bought in a long, long, time, I’ve been waxing lyrical about it. It’s double layered and super warm – ‘a product of the cold cold north’ is their motto so you know you’re in good hands.

I’ve also been snuggling up with my recycled denim By Mölle throw. The Dutch brand gives old jeans a second life by removing zips and buttons and spinning the fibres to a soft yarn for their throws – both sustainable and stylish (you can see a cosy bedroom I styled here with it). I can’t stop using this handmade mug for my favourite earl grey, while The White Company’s Winter candle is easing me into the festive spirit, with hints of cinnamon, cloves and zesty orange. Dry winter skin is being kept at bay with Aesop’s blue chamomile facial hydrating masque, which you can use once or twice a week on top of your usual moisturiser for super-soft baby skin.
